Chapter Nine

“I appreciate you coming by here on a Saturday, Rick.” Kull picked up a glass, tipping it toward the detective. “Beer?”

“Water would be great. Thanks.” Taking a seat at the end of the bar, Rick glanced around, spotting a couple acquaintances, Harpur and Sam, deep in a private conversation. “Quiet today.”

“Don’t let it fool you. Saturdays are the busiest, with the action starting early afternoon.” Handing Rick his water, Kull sat next to him, sending a quick look to his day manager to take over.

“This is your party, Kull. You invited me and I came. Tell me what’s going on.”

“Word has it you’re doing a little digging into the death of Vivian Peterson. If so, I may have some information for you.”

Rick leaned his arms on the bar, glancing over at Kull. “And you heard this from?”

“The sheriff.” He looked around, leaning toward Rick “Del encouraged me to talk to you before I leave town. I may be able to add to what Amy has in her notes.”

“I’m good with whatever you can provide.”

“Good. Let’s go back into my office.” Walking past the manager, they made their way to the back. “Ignore the mess. It never gets any better.”

Rick chuckled. “No worries. This is how I live.”

Opening a file cabinet, Kull pulled out a dog-eared folder, glancing through it before laying it on his desk and leaning over it.

“I never showed Amy any of the photos of the people who had opinions about Viv’s death. I figured if anything came of her search, I’d hand these over to whoever needed them.” Spreading out the pictures, he selected one showing a group of men, pointing to specific faces. “These two men are officers in the northern Idaho chapter of the Savage Wolves. Bear is the vice president, and Trip is the sergeant-at-arms.” Switching to another photograph, he pointed to the same men again, then to a third one. “This is Frenchy. He’s been the president since about the time Vivian left Pete. I can’t tell you why, but there has always been bad blood between Pete and Frenchy. It didn’t help when Viv filed for divorce, then moved close to the northern Idaho chapter. Frenchy gave her a job, which didn’t sit too well with Pete.” Kull glanced at Rick. “At least that’s what I’ve heard from more than one person.”

“My understanding is you and Pete are friends. Have been for a long time. Did he ever say anything to you?”

Kull straightened, then sat down. “Once. I rode to his clubhouse in White Basin not too long after Vivian and Amy came to Burnt River. You’ve got to understand, Pete’s not an emotional man, never has been. The only two people who could ever get to him were Vivian and Amy. He’s not one to apologize, no matter the circumstances, but I never saw him so messed up as after they left. He’d been in love with her for years, never let himself hookup with the women who hung around the club.
